The first generation of smartwatches looked like an attempt to transfer some of the capabilities of a smartphone to a wristwatch. Since then, these devices are often perceived as an exotic gadget and generally raise many questions. However, smartwatches today are a far cry from what they were even three years ago. Their functionality and concept have changed noticeably. But to answer the question “Why do we need a smartwatch?” It's still not easy. After a month with the Samsung Gear S3, I decided to try this, while simultaneously sharing my impressions of the device itself. I mainly used the Gear S3 as a regular watch, as a fitness tracker, as a sports watch, and also for solving small tasks using third-party applications.

Wristwatch for every day

When choosing a wristwatch, you can spend an eternity deciding which dial is better, because you can’t change it without changing the watch itself. There is no such problem in the Gear S3; the round 1.3-inch Super AMOLED watch display with a resolution of 360x360 pixels allows you to change dials at your discretion. The Samsung Apps store offers a wide variety of watch face designs, from funny cartoon watch faces to replicas of famous classic watches.

Of course, this is not the most important thing in a smartwatch, however, it’s nice that you can “adjust” it to your style or mood. The same applies to the straps; in the Gear S3 they are standard - 22 mm, so they are easy to change to any compatible ones.

One cannot help but recall the design of the Samsung Gear S3, which, although larger than the previous version, in my opinion, looks better on the hand. At the same time, the round design of the model does not reveal that it contains an electronic device, and the ability to make the screen constantly active bridges the gap with conventional watches.

Most often, people perceive the Gear S3 as a wristwatch, and this is actually good, because it is designed for everyday use.

Physical Activity Tracking

Initially, smartwatches did not try to compete with fitness bracelets, but after the latter began to acquire displays, it became clear that these were devices of the same category. Accordingly, Samsung paid special attention to this functionality. The Gear S3 uses a number of sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, heart rate monitor) that allow the watch to count steps, floors climbed, total activity minutes, heart rate, and automatically track sleep. In addition, the Gear S3, for example, understands when you ride a bike and records the corresponding activity.

All this data is stored in the S Health app and can be synchronized between different devices. Sure, a smartwatch can't make you walk more or sleep longer, but it does encourage you to do so. At the same time, this is done in a light playful way. For example, the Gear S3 displays all your daily activity as a filling circle, and you need to try to keep it to a minimum of gray segments that appear if you do nothing.

In addition, S Health allows you to compete with friends or other users of the service. In this way, the watch encourages you to be more active, including periodically reminding you that it’s time to go for a walk. S Health creates a report weekly, which you can also use to track your progress.

Initially, it seemed to me that there was no big difference between a regular fitness bracelet and this system, but in the end it was very addictive, including due to greater clarity. When you see that, for example, you have to walk another 2000 steps to achieve a result, you try to take yourself a short walk. Oddly enough, smart watches can motivate, if, of course, you have a desire to lead a more active lifestyle.

Sports activities

A pedometer is just the basic functionality of a smartwatch. But in a model like the Gear S3, it's complemented by the ability to track sports activities. The watch has a built-in GPS module, which allows you to more accurately measure the distance traveled, for example, while running, as well as running without a smartphone. In total, the Gear S3 allows you to track 15 exercises, including those on simulators. There is also an item for “other” physical activity, that is, for those exercises that are not highlighted separately.

All results are synchronized by S Health, so they can later be viewed on your smartphone. I've mostly done outdoor running with the Gear S3, so I'll focus on that functionality. And in the watch it turned out to be at the level of such popular running applications as Runkeeper, Endomondo, Nike+ Run Club, Runtastic and others. The Gear S3 also tracks distance, time and pace, but the watch also measures your heart rate and provides guidance during your workout. For example, depending on the chosen goal of jogging, Gear S3 suggests when you need to speed up or, conversely, slow down.

The heart rate while running is measured relatively accurately, but only if you fix the watch correctly. They should be at least two centimeters from the wrist and fit snugly to the skin. In this case, the error compared to chest sensors will be small, and you can build on this data while running, choosing a pace that will allow you to stay within your comfortable heart rate zone.

All information from a run is saved in S Health, where the user can see the time spent, distance, pace, route on the map, as well as speed, heart rate and elevations.

In general, running with the Gear S3 is convenient; you can leave your smartphone at home and listen to music through wireless headphones directly from the watch, having previously downloaded music files to it. In addition, functionally S Health is almost in no way inferior to specialized programs for runners.

Applications

One of the most important features of smartwatches is support for third-party programs that expand their functionality. Since Samsung smartwatches run on its own Tizen platform, which was not previously famous for the large number of available applications. However, now the situation has begun to improve, especially in terms of programs that allow you to work with local services or obtain local information. So, what can you use on the Gear S3?

To begin with, it is worth noting the standard programs. Right out of the box, the watch allows you to view your calendar, create reminders, and view the weather forecast and world time. In addition, they show alerts and messages from your smartphone, and also allow you to receive and make calls. But this already quite broad functionality can be expanded through third-party applications.

It so happened that I used programs on the Gear S3, which can be divided into three categories: transport, finance, delivery. Let's see what happened in each of them.

Transport

Uber and Uklon

These applications allow you to literally call a taxi in a couple of clicks without taking your smartphone out of your pocket. At the same time, it is worth praising Uklon, their program is more convenient and works faster.

"Yandex.Transport"

The program shows the nearest stops, the public transport that stops at them, the frequency with which it runs, as well as the waiting time for the nearest bus or trolleybus. Unfortunately, this is all the functionality of the application on the Gear S3, and it does not allow you to see what route the vehicle is traveling on. However, sometimes this helps to get to the desired point in the city.

"Yandex.Navigator"

A very loud name for a program that simply shows the level of traffic jams in the city on the clock. That’s right, there is no navigation in this application, but it shows traffic congestion and makes a projection of them several hours in advance.

Finance

"Privat24"

An application for PrivatBank clients, which allows you to view your current and bonus accounts and see the latest card withdrawals. But, most importantly, it itself can turn the Gear S3 into a payment card that works via NFC. If you select the appropriate settings on your smartphone, you can use your watch to pay for purchases by placing your watch on a compatible terminal. I have a MasterCard so couldn't check if this works with Visa.

The program allows you to find the nearest ATMs and see where they are on the map. In this case, you can select in the settings which ATMs of which banks should be shown.

"Currency FinanceUA"

A convenient application with which you can quickly view current exchange rates on the interbank market, in banks and exchange offices.

Portmone

The program allows you to quickly top up your mobile number or pay a bill from previously saved templates.

Delivery

"Nova Poshta"

A delivery service application through which you can find out where the package is, call a courier, or show your loyalty card.

In conclusion, I note that almost all local applications for the Gear S3 can be called useful, since they allow you to transfer some of the smartphone’s tasks to the watch and solve them without taking it out of your pocket.

Eventually

Like me, in my opinion, the Samsung Gear S3 is the best smartwatch for Android so far. For me, the main things in them were the fitness and sports functions, as well as applications from local services. It will be good if Samsung continues to develop its line in this direction. I hope this material helped you understand what smartwatches in general, and the Gear S3 in particular, can be useful for.

Which I really liked then. Which was quite strange, because previous attempts by Koreans to make watches caused slight bewilderment.

Over the past year, my opinion about watches has not changed, but on the contrary, it has improved. For two reasons.

Firstly, after the review was published, they pointed out an inaccuracy to me: it turned out that the Gear S2 still knew how to keep the display on and show the time constantly. It’s just that this function was hidden quite deep into the watch itself. But initially everything was limited to a monochrome picture (white on black), which looked rather boring against the backdrop of the color dials of watches with Android Wear. But Samsung updated the firmware, after which color dials appeared in abundance. Let me emphasize that we are talking about color in standby mode. In active mode, the picture is full color, there is an excellent Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 360x360 pixels.

Secondly, there was simply a gigantic amount of watch faces for Gear 2. Tizen, let's say, is not the most widespread platform, and I never expected such diversity. And here there are both free and paid ones - you’ll get tired of choosing. My heart finally sank when dials appeared for the Gear S2 that copied the design of the “Commander” watch. This is probably not very good from the point of view of compliance with copyrights, but wearing smart “Commander” cards on your hand, and even constantly changing the design, is cool.

For me personally, the Gear S2 and the second-generation Moto 360 are quite equivalent. Both from the point of view of functionality and from the point of view of convenience. Samsung makes it very convenient to control using a rotating bezel, but Android Wear is not a hassle at all. The hardware of the watches is almost the same, and therefore they probably consume the same battery. By evening I usually had about 60% charge left. I don’t like survival experiments; I always put the watch on the docking station at night.

At the end of summer, Samsung announced a new model, the Gear S3. Any day now they will be sold in Russia, but I’ve already been wearing them for a week and am impressed.

What is the difference?

I’ll say right away that I studied the Gear S3 Classic, not the Gear S3 Frontier. The latter is distinguished by the presence of a SIM card inside and a radically black body color. I also need a SIM card in a watch, but the black case looks much better than the steel one. I hope that one day it will migrate to Classic.

It's immediately noticeable that the Gear S3 is much larger and thicker. In numbers, the difference does not look very significant - the screen diagonal has increased from 1.2 inches to 1.3 (at the same resolution), and the thickness has increased from 11.4 to 12.9 mm. The weight has grown from 47 grams to 59 (excluding the strap). Everyone likes watches in different sizes. Personally, the dimensions of the younger Moto 360 and Gear S2 seem optimal to me, but there are many men who prefer something more substantial. The Gear S3 is designed specifically for them. They are not huge, but really large, and you can see them from afar.

There are only two major hardware changes compared to Gear2.

The first is the appearance of a built-in speaker, so now you can talk for hours without a phone in hands-free mode. Motorists will definitely love this.

The second is a GPS receiver (also called GLONASS). Now, with Samsung watches, like the new Apple Watch, you can run without your phone, and they will record everything.

The remaining changes would be more accurately called cosmetic. The amount of RAM has increased - from 512 megabytes to 768. It’s hard to feel it. The volume of onboard flash remains the same, 4 GB. Instead of the Exynos 3250 SoC there is a new Exynos 7270, but there are the same number of cores (2) and the same operating frequency (1 GHz). Most likely, the advantage is only in power consumption, because the clocks are the same in operating speed. Still, the Tizen platform is in full control of Samsung, and it would be a sin not to optimize it for its own hardware.

The battery capacity has increased from 250 mAh to 380 mAh. By smartphone standards this is nothing, but by watch standards it’s a big step forward. Samsung promises up to four days of operation without recharging. My watch is new, the battery has not yet been trained, so it’s too early to judge the battery life. It happens that you use up 18% of the charge in a day, and sometimes you use up 35%. So I can only guarantee two days without recharging. The rest depends on the load, the watch face you're using, and your need to keep the screen lit all the time.

Everything else about the Gear S3 is the same as the Gear S2. IP68 water resistance, accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, barometer, light sensor... If you like the idea of paying by the hour, it is also present in the S3, and if in the S2 Samsung Pay only worked with contactless terminals, then in the S3 they also added magnetic stripe emulation .

Personal impressions

I understand why Samsung decided to keep the screen resolution the same on larger (and more expensive) watches. For compatibility. Running after developers and persuading them to make new versions of watch faces and applications is quite troublesome (and expensive).

But still I cannot support this decision. Highly detailed watch faces that look like they've been painted on the Gear S2 show a bit of grain on the S3. There is nothing wrong. And, probably, if I had not walked with S2 for a long time before this, I would not have noticed anything at all. But, given the circumstances, I notice.

The bezel has grown along with the watch, becoming heavier and more difficult to turn. Perhaps it’s also because on the S2 the finger touches the teeth on the sides, which enhances grip, but here the finger slides along a wide strip of steel. Another small thing. And again - I notice.

In general, I rather like the increased dimensions. I don't have any strict preferences. In my huge collection of analog watches there are both very small and huge pieces, and there was something to suit everyone’s mood. Perhaps (perhaps) the watch should have been thinner by about 0.5 mm. But, rest assured, there will be those who would like to add half a centimeter on the contrary.

“Full” version of the dial

“Commander” in standby mode

The Gear S3 will keep a very close eye on you by default. “Wow, you’ve walked so many steps!”, “Hey, you’ve climbed five floors!”, “Hey, why are you sitting too long, come on, go walk around!” This can be turned off, or you can leave it - as you like. The radius within which the watch works with a smartphone via Bluetooth remains the same, and if you go beyond it, the watch will switch to Wi-Fi and continue sending notifications.

The main impression from the Gear S3 is that they are big. From a user experience point of view, everything is very, very similar. However, watches on Android Wear can do the same thing.

Yes, it’s worth clarifying that the watch works with almost any Android device (from version 4.4) and is partially compatible with the iPhone. That is, at the level of warnings about calls and messages. Full support for iOS is promised in the first quarter of 2017, but there is a small nuance: they started promising it back at the end of 2015...

Price and selection

I don’t yet know the official price of the Gear S3 Classic in Russia. In the States they cost $299 excluding sales tax, which in our money means about 21 thousand rubles. I can assume that a copy from the official supply will cost 24,990 rubles. The version with a SIM card (Frontier) costs the same.

At the same time, the official price of the Gear S2 Classic in Russia is 19,990 rubles, but can easily be found for 16-17 thousand. There are no plans to discontinue the previous generation yet.

Which option should I choose? If you need hands-free calling on the clock, take the Gear S3. It’s the same story if you run a lot and it’s important to overlay routes on the map.

Otherwise, everything depends only on size. If you want something bigger and more impressive, we take the S3. Do you prefer the compact version – S2. In any case, you won't be able to save much. If you are just trying to figure out whether you need a smart watch in principle, the cheapest and most decent ticket to this world is.

We constantly hear that smart watches “didn’t work” and that they are not needed. But, being a watch lover with considerable experience, I can only look at ordinary watches from the point of view of a collector. And only smart people can wear it.

Samsung Gear S3, despite significant changes in design, represents a smooth evolutionary development of ideas from S2, without turning its predecessors into archaism. You can choose calmly. Choice is wonderful.

Samsung Gear – S3 Classic is a new line of smartwatches from the Korean manufacturer. Of the five generations of Samsung smart gadgets, this invention came as a surprise to the global market. In 2017, buyers recognized it as one of the best representatives of such devices. Let's take a closer look at the characteristics of the model. Below is our full review of the Samsung Gear S3 Classic.

General overview of the gadget

When developing a new line of smart products, Samsung took into account absolutely all the features of use - from packaging and configuration to the operating system. This was done for maximum comfort when using Gear 3. The device is placed in a dense round box.

The package includes:

  • Instructions
  • Stand for the case
  • Charger

The classic design of the case immediately attracts attention. The Gear S3 Classic style allows you to use the device in all life situations - at work, traveling, walking or training.

Specifications

The main difference between this representative and previous Samsung models is the internal structure, in other words, the “filling”. The manufacturer has equipped the gadget with a large amount of RAM and a strong processor. Which indicates the expansion of the device's capabilities.

Technical characteristics of the Gir s3 Classic sample:

  • Operating system Tizen 2.3.2
  • Screen type Super AMOLED
  • Diagonal 1.3"
  • Resolution 360×360
  • Number of pixels – 278 ppi
  • Dual-core processor Samsung Exynos 7270 (power – 1 GHz)
  • Graphics accelerator ARM Mali-T720
  • RAM 768 MB
  • Built-in memory 4 GB
  • Non-removable battery, Li-Ion, power 380 mAh

The Gear S3 Classic smartwatch does not have a memory card slot or a camera. This narrows the capabilities of the device. The inability to use a flash card indicates a limited amount of memory, and therefore a limit on installed applications.

Base operating system

The main feature of Samsung Classic is the presence of its own operating system. This feature impressed buyers.

The operating system on which the Gear watch runs is Tizen 2.3.2. It is a “native” genuine system of the Korean manufacturer. This significantly improves the functioning of the gadget.

An innovation built into the operating system of the Samsung Gear S3 Classic watch is the bezel that operates the device’s controls. Thanks to this “bells and whistles”, the following functions are performed using gestures:

  • Turning pages
  • Scrolling screens
  • Brightness adjustment
  • Volume setting
  • Player control, etc.

In addition to gesture control, the device responds to classic touches. A light touch of the screen is enough to instantly execute a command. There is no slowdown in work.

Functionality

The Samsung Gear S3 Classic smart watch is equipped with all major types of wireless interfaces. Among them:

  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • NFC and MST
  • GPS and GLONASS

Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Its task is communication. Even if there is no pairing with a smartphone, the presented model will remain connected.

The Bluetooth 4.2 system allows collaboration with a smartphone. With its help, two gadgets work together.

To pair your phone and watch, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Activate Bluetooth on your phone;
  2. Go to the watch menu and open settings;
  3. Find the corresponding parameters in the settings and click the browse command;
  4. Wait for the phone name to appear;
  5. Click on it and pair.

The Classic is also equipped with NFC and MST. But! If the corresponding applications are not installed on your smartphone, then it will be impossible to use them.

GPS and GLONASS navigation systems are very convenient for traveling, outdoor training and in everyday life. They accurately determine the user's location.

The watch contains several sensors. Tests have shown that they accurately determine the indicators. The sensors include the following:

  • Accelerometer
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Microgyro
  • Barometer

The functionality of the device can only be fully realized using applications installed on the smartphone. The manufacturer has developed many programs specifically for this sample. With their help, the following actions are performed:

  • Phone camera control
  • Counting time using a timer and stopwatch
  • Track activity throughout the day
  • Sending messages
  • Music control
  • View phone pictures, etc.

At the international forum IFA 2016, Samsung presented one of the models of the third generation of Gear smart watches. The device is available in two versions - and Frontier. The first model is designed for mass demand, and the second for a more selective category of consumers, since the Samsung Gear S3 frontier sm 760 smart watch has expanded functionality and an original stylish design.

Potential and ergonomics

The previous generation of watches forced developers to take a fresh look and improve the watch model. The device turned out to be more aggressive in appearance. The body of the product has increased in diameter and changed its edging - it has become slightly corrugated and with uneven edges.

Control

The main role in the structure of the watch is played by the “digital crown”, a special toothed ring (bezel). It controls basic functions. By scrolling the wheel on the display, all notifications in installed applications pop up one by one while working with the main menu. By clicking on the “window” you can view the details in detail.

Let's say that when working with the “digital crown,” the device speeds up the process of controlling the gadget in the chosen direction.

Strap

Despite the fact that the watch is made in a sporty style, it may well suit a strict business style. Especially for such options, a wide selection of straps in various shades is offered. It’s also impossible to go wrong with the dimensions - Samsung produces three types of sizes S, M and L. The watch case has a diameter of 22 mm, so changing the strap is not difficult. In addition, if you prefer a strict style in everyday life, then take a closer look at the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier watch. They will fit perfectly into a business look.

Display

The body of the Samsung S3 Frontier smartwatch is made of cold forged steel with a matte finish. Only the back of the lid is made of glass, since there are sensors underneath it. The company does not hide the fact that when developing the model, the appearance was guided by the Swiss TAG Heart Connected watches, known for their relationship to elite devices.

The display fully displays all information; there are no voids or so-called “dead zones”, which are usually filled with plastic parts. In addition to the “digital crown,” the watch is controlled using two buttons located on the right side of the case.

On the left side there are three sensors for the speaker. The device copes well with a wireless headset, for example, you can calmly talk while driving without removing the watch from your wrist and without being distracted from the road.

Despite the fact that the watch is declared as a sports watch, it is not entirely convenient to exercise in it. The device is quite bulky, restricts wrist movements and, judging by reviews, the heart rate sensor does not always show the correct results.

Device Features

Let's consider the main characteristics of the presented watch model:

  • compatible with Android device;
  • calendar;
  • Email;
  • social notifications;
  • makes it easy to make and receive phone calls;
  • simple navigation, clear picture;
  • touch display with a resolution of 360 x 360;
  • wireless connection with your smartphone;
  • Bluetooth connection.
  • autonomous connection (this means that the watch can work for a long time without recharging);
  • space for a SIM card and an additional memory card chip;
  • Wi-Fi;
  • a device that allows you to make and receive calls and texts on your watch with the mobile number of your smartphone, even when the phone is nearby;

Equipment

The watch set is in a stylish cylindrical package (small box). The contents are separated by neat cardboard partitions to improve stability during transportation. The device is initially magnetized to the charging part of the product. The average estimated cost in Russian online stores is $370-400.

The kit includes:

  • Samsung Gear S3 Frontier;
  • strap;
  • wireless charging dock;
  • Quick Start Guide;
  • user guide.

Classic vs Frontier, what's the difference?

Comparing the two models, what you notice first is that the watch has begun to look more massive, despite the fact that the case in both models is the same (46x46x12.9 mm), the strap is normal (22 mm), can be replaced with other similar ones strap models from other manufacturers. If the previous version of S2 galaxy used a separate latch, then the new version does not have anything like that.

Case and strap

Strap options can be different, it all depends on the material and color scheme. They are produced from leather, silicone, rubber. In addition, the case diameter is universal, so straps from other manufacturers will easily fit them. The metal case of the watch uses the same steel as in the Gear S2 watch - 316L, but the case itself has changed - it has become more massive and looks noticeably better.

In the new version of the smartwatch, the rotary mechanism (benzel) remains; it performs the same function as before, but its edging has been made ribbed. Both versions of the watch have an IP68 protection standard, preventing the ingress of moisture, dirt and dust. But, the Frontier model also added such functions as protection against shocks, temperature surges, and monitoring for increased vibration. This innovation is made according to military standards.

We can say that the Classic is the standard version of the watch with the usual set of functions, and the Frontier is a universal “unbreakable” model with the MIL-810G protection standard (the watch is suitable for active training, it is protected from strong impacts, etc.). If you weigh the watch without a strap, the Frontier has an advantage - it is heavier. The fastening element is comfortable, there are no complaints here.

Consider the screen

If in the previous version the size was 1.2 inches, then the improved model has 1.3 inches. The resolution was left the same 360x360 pixels for application compatibility. The smartwatch has a feature that supports AlwaysOn Display, thanks to which the screen is always on. Testing has shown that active work is possible within two days.

The screen is covered with special Corning Gorilla Glass SR+. This makes the watch resistant to scratches and cracks on the glass. In addition, the function ensures high sensitivity of the sensors (if you preset the menu), then the screen will respond to finger touches even with gloves.

The increased screen size has made it possible to improve the charging battery; the capacity has increased to 380 mAh. Wireless charging connection is carried out using the cradle included in the kit. The average duration of a full charge is two hours. The average operating time of the watch depends on what notifications and applications are installed; it is approximately 3-4 days.

The lower side buttons on the previous Classic are simpler and less comfortable, while on the Frontier they have a ribbed surface that makes them easy to press.
